Jersey Comparison: Reebok Premier, Reebok Authentic 'Indo Edge' and Reebok Edge 2.0
Hello stars fans, after that awful loss last night (which myself and a few others around this sub got to witness in person) I figure I could help get your mind off of it by doing a comparison between the options available for purchase if you're looking to snag up a new jersey for the year. disclaimer, this is going to be a longass post. buckle up.
Before I begin, I'll explain the classification of each jersey option. The Reebok Premier jersey is the lowest in terms of quality when it comes to the materials used. It's for your 'everyday' fan looking to pick up a jersey (and I think they look great and get the job done.) But this is where things get interesting. Back in circa 2012, Reebok and the NHL decided that to save costs, all 'authentic' jerseys would be produced in Indonesia. Up until then, all authentic jerseys were produced in Canada and were the same jerseys actually worn by the players out on the ice. The 'indo' edges are not the same as what the players wear, which has lead to a bit of an outcry as to why Reebok and the NHL would market a product as 'authentic' when it actually is not. So basically, if you've dropped the 250 bones for a shiny new Victory Green 'authentic' jersey within the last few years, it's highly likely that you've bought yourself an Indo Edge jersey. Finally, the Reebok 2.0 IS in fact what the players wear out on the ice. They are made in Canada and have a significantly heavier weight and quality to them over the Indo Edge. They are rather hard to find and aren't sold anywhere in Dallas, only online (which turns out to be false, they can be found at specific fan shops at the AAC. Thanks Kitten_Hammer for the cottection.) The one that I found was one of the remaining two on IceJerseys.com but there should be a few available on eBay. I'll also note my Indo Edge and my Canadian made Edge 2.0 were the same price. The Canadian Edge is just much harder to find.
'Why does this shit matter? I just want a jersey to support my team.' It doesn't matter whatsoever, I'm just trying to help educate anyone who reads this on what options are on the market.
I'll start with a simple photo of my premier, authentic 'indo' edge and 2.0 edge from left to right. http://s23.postimg.org/pvjzsqiiz/image.jpg From bird's eye view, they all look very similar with a few small differences. The most notable one in my opinion is the shoulder patch. Here's a comparison between the premier and the Indo Edge (the Indo and the 2.0 have the same quality of patch.)
I've tried to highlight here how much different the screen print is in comparison to the actual shoulder patch. The actual shoulder patch is shiny, well made and looks noticeably better in real life. I have a few old school jerseys with screen printed images on them which have since cracked or buckled. I wanted some jerseys that would stand the test of time, so I opted to spend a bit extra dough to ensure that.
Another big difference between the reebok premier and the Indo Edge/Canadian 2.0 is the inclusion of the fight strap. The fight strap was implemented sometime during the 80's to make sure that if a player got in a fight, the opponent wouldn't be able to pull the jersey over his head and go to town. Here's a picture difference between my Indo edge and my premier.
Lastly, to tell the difference between an 'Indo Edge' and a Canadian made 2.0 that the players actually use during a game, you have to look at the neck collar. The Indo Edge has a lime green band along the top wheras the Canadian 2.0 has a solid black color, as noted in this picture.
Notice also the inclusion of the Canadian flag on the seam of the home Victory Green 2.0.
So there you have it. I bought my Indo Edge jersey from the hangar just outside of the AAC with the assumption that I was getting the real deal, but in fact I was not. But don't play hard into the reebok premier jerseys or the Indo Edges either. The Indo Edge has a noticeably better fabric than the premier, but the premiers look just as good as the real deal for half the cost. My only concern though is that the screen printed shoulder patch on the premiers may eventually wear down in a couple years which is why I opted to spend a bit extra money on a jersey that if taken care of would last as long as possible. The Indo edges will stand the test of time, but don't be fooled by the NHL and Reebok's scheme to lure money off of you thinking that you're getting the real deal because you aren't. Every NHL player wears a Canadian Reebok Edge 2.0 jersey made in Canada, rendering the term 'authentic' for the Indonesian made jerseys useless. I hope this helps you make an educated decision for your next jersey purchase.
..also it should be noted that Adidas (thanks ChiDaddy123 for the correction) has acquired the rights to produce the jerseys for every NHL team starting in 2017 which may or may not include an on jersey sponsorship ad included on every jersey similar to how soccer jerseys look. http://s17.postimg.org/pt4j3wkf3/image.jpg I hope to god this doesn't happen, but knowing Bettman and his two sides I'd be prepared. What size Reebok premier would fit best for me?
Im male, 6' 2' and weight 205 pounds. I bought a reebok premier size large but wonder if i should potentially ask if i could get the ordered changed or canceled and get an XL instead.. I want something that wont be so big that ill swim in it, but not tight that it doesnt allow me to move much in it or be able to fit a sweatshirt underneath at all. I am losing weight currently and looking to be at about 180.. Should I get a size Large or XL? Thanks for the input!
